What is the Memphis Woodcarvers Association?
The Memphis Woodcarvers Association is a community of individuals who enjoy woodcarving and woodworking. Our members range from complete beginners to experienced carvers who enjoy sharing their knowledge, techniques, and passion for the craft.
Our goal is to promote woodcarving through fellowship, education, demonstrations, and the exchange of ideas.
Do I have to be an experienced woodcarver to attend?
Not at all!
Beginners are always welcome. Many of our members attended their first meeting with little or no carving experience. If you’re interested in learning, we’d love to meet you.
Can I attend a meeting before joining?
Absolutely.
Visitors are encouraged to attend a meeting, meet our members, and see what we’re all about before deciding whether they’d like to become involved.
When and where do you meet?

Meeting locations and times may occasionally change, so we recommend checking the calendar before attending.
Is there a membership fee?
Please refer to the Membership information on our website or speak with one of our officers during a meeting for the most current information regarding membership dues.
What kinds of woodcarving do your members do?
Our members enjoy many different styles of carving, including:
- Relief carving
- Carving in the round
- Chip carving
- Bark carving
- Woodburning (Pyrography)
- Whittling
- Decorative carving
- Caricature carving
- Wildlife carving
- Santa carving
- Walking sticks and canes
- Wood spirits
- Woodworking projects
No matter what interests you, chances are someone in our group enjoys that style of carving.
Do I need to bring my own tools?
If you’re new to woodcarving, don’t worry.
Many members are happy to offer advice about selecting your first tools, and there may be opportunities to try different tools before making a purchase.
As you become more involved, you’ll likely want to purchase your own carving tools and safety equipment.
What type of wood should I use?
Basswood is one of the most popular woods for beginning carvers because it is soft, easy to carve, and readily available.
Members are always happy to discuss different wood species and recommend materials based on the project you’re interested in creating.
Do you offer classes?
Our association periodically hosts demonstrations, workshops, and classes led by experienced members and guest instructors.

Can children attend?
Young people who have an interest in woodcarving are welcome when accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult.
Because carving tools are extremely sharp, adult supervision is essential.
Do I need to bring a project?
No.
You’re welcome to bring a current project if you’d like to carve during the meeting, ask for advice, or share your progress.
Many first-time visitors simply come to observe and meet members.
Can I ask questions about my carving?
Absolutely!
One of the best parts of our community is the willingness of members to share knowledge, techniques, and encouragement.

Do you hold carving competitions?
From time to time, members may participate in local, regional, or state carving shows and competitions.

I have never carved before. Will I fit in?
Absolutely.
Every experienced woodcarver was once a beginner. Our members enjoy helping newcomers learn the craft, improve their skills, and discover the enjoyment that comes from creating something with their own hands.
